Valley teens race in regional cross-country meet

A group of high school runners from the lower Valley represented their community yesterday at a big regional cross country race in Boise.

The group, all Cedarcrest High School runners competing for the “Valley Cross Country” club, took on top foes from all over the Northwest at the Nike Northwest Regional Championships, being held at Eagle Island State Park just outside the Idaho state capital.

Leading the Valley delegation was CHS sophomore girls’ star Elsie Dombek. Dombek, coming off a strong finish last Saturday for the Red Wolves at the 2A state high school meet in the Tri-Cities, finished 13th overall in the open invitational race. She ran the 5,000m course in 19 minutes, 44.34 seconds. Other Valley entrants finished further back, including Kate Vergillo (76th, 21:06.77), Mary Cate Babcock (86th, 21:16.86) and Kelly Hall (91st, 21:20.67).

On the boys’ side, Cedarcrest senior Grant Van Valkenburg took 51st for Valley in the championship division, clocking 16:13.46, and Brennan LeBlanc led the locals in the boys’ open division, taking 132nd, with a time of just over 18 minutes.

The runners, due to state rules, were not permitted to represent CHS in the event, instead, they raced under the Valley Cross Country club banner.
