A note from your editor……

We just posted a link to this on our Twitter page, but have made a decision to also share this with you here on the blog.

As many of you may know if you have been following our coverage of Cedarcrest High School sports here over the past couple of days, the school and its athletes are reeling after a student passed away prior to the start of classes on Thursday. We have a name for you.

It was Bryce Hefner, a senior boys’ athlete at the school who competed in multiple sports, including basketball and cross country. His family has set up a GoFundMe page where they are currently raising money to help support funeral expenses, etc., as they deal with what has been a very difficult past 48 hours or so for them.

The family was only anticipating raising a few hundred dollars, but has raised around $9,000 now as of this writing with that continuing to grow. We urge you all whether you are in the Lower Valley or Upper Valley to please click on the below link to help support the Hefner’s.

From what we have been able to gather, it appears to us that Cedarcrest and their campus community is dealing with a lot of the same pain that Mount Si and its campus community – including your editor – felt when popular wrestler and student leader Cody Botten passed away about 10 years ago now.

Your editor remembers being there for the Valley Record in transit between a cross country meet and a home volleyball match on a Wednesday, IWRC in October of that particular year when this happened, and coming to the gym right when news of Cody’s passing broke to the students who were congregated inside the school and seeing the emotion on the faces of both students and staff as they were receiving the news. This will go down as perhaps the most difficult moment your editor has ever been a part of while on this beat for almost 20 years. It necessitated a group hug between yours truly and a couple of teachers/coaches at the school and was something your editor struggled with for several days afterward just like many of his fellow students did, along with their teachers.

So if you can, let’s all show Cedarcrest, its students, staff and campus community that we all as a Valley care. That we are one community. That we are one Valley.

Again, here’s the link.
