College baseball and softball news

From the college front:

Massengill makes her mark for Thiel College (PA) softball
Thiel College freshman catcher Danielle Massengill, from North Bend, has been a huge factor this spring for the Tomcat softball team as they make their way through the season. The last two days have seen two of her biggest performances yet. Yesterday, Massengill went 4-4 with her first college home run, a double, three runs scored and five more driven in as Thiel won the first of two against Oberlin of Ohio, 8-6. The Tomcats completed the doubleheader sweep with a win of the nightcap, 6-5, where Massengill went 1-3. Her efforts yesterday followed up a strong showing in the nightcap of a Tuesday twinbill against Waynesburg.

In that game, which Thiel won 10-1 for a split of the pair (the Tomcats fell 1-0 in the first game), the 2011 Mount Si grad went 3-3 with two runs scored and three driven in. In the first game, Massengill went 0-3.

Albany sweeps pair from Dartmouth softball
Albany (NY) scored a pair of 4-0 home wins over Dartmouth on the softball diamond yesterday. Big Green senior Hillary Barker, from Duvall, saw action in both contests for Dartmouth. She DH’d the first game and went 0-3, then pitched the second game and took the loss, giving up all four runs, only two of which were earned, on six hits in three innings. She walked one, struck out three and went 0-2 at the plate.

Proudfoot strong defensively, but Tech baseball falls to New Mexico
Texas Tech fell to New Mexico 6-4 in the final game of a two-game series yesterday in Lubbock, TX. Freshman Tim Proudfoot went 1-4 for the Red Raiders, but it was the defense of the 2011 Mount Si grad from North Bend which was the story. He recorded three putouts and nine assists, as he continues to do well at shortstop for TT. Tuesday, the Red Raiders fell 10-3 to the Lobos, with Proudfoot going 1-3.
