Wildcat girls’ tennis news

Mount Si’s girls’ tennis team has been busy recently as it aims to finish its season on a high note. Here’s results from recent matches.

Bellevue takes care of Wildcats
On April 16, the Bellevue Wolverines came to Mount Si and left winning five of the seven matches played in the contest. There was one win each for the Wildcats in singles and doubles. The singles winner was Kerry Pemberton, as she defeated Bellevue’s Crystal Chon in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. The doubles unit of Hannah Still and Rachel Mallasch scored the doubles win for Mount Si, and they had to work hard for it, beating the Wolverines’ duo of Ellen Pong and Maeve Bell 7-6 (8-6 tiebreak), 4-6, 10-8.

The five defeats were for the most part in convincing fashion, although Mount Si singles player Rachel Walker gave her Bellevue opponent, Corey Chang, a little bit of a run for her money in their match before falling in that contest.

Wildcats blanked by LW
April 17, Lake Washington rolled into MSHS’ tennis facility and went home with a 7-0 win over the Wildcats. The doubles matches saw Mount Si give LW challenges, with one three-set contest, but as noted, the Kangs were able to get it done and score the wins.

History for Mount Si against Mercer Island
As has been the case for as long as these two teams have played one another, Mercer Island dominated things against Mount Si in their match, which took place last Tuesday at Mercer Island High School, but the Wildcats made a little history in the process. One of their doubles teams posted a win, which according to coach Jim Gibowski may have been the first time that a MSHS girls’ tennis competitor accomplished that feat. That doubles unit was the one featuring Olivia Howland and Peyton McCulley. The Mount Si pair beat MI’s Mindy Weinberg and Saron Kahan 6-2, 7-6 (7-5 tiebreak).

Howland and McCulley are both juniors, and both are year-round players who also play out of the Robinswood facility in Bellevue. This was a great accomplishment, and one which we feel is worthy of something a little more special. Find out what that is later on today.

Mount Si meets Sammamish today and Liberty tomorrow to close out the season.
