Diamond cuts – yes, diamond cuts – to start a new week!!

There’s a lot of snow on the ground this morning, which makes it all the more remarkable we’re talking a little softball on this Monday. Yes, softball. A pair of area teams with Valley high school and middle school players got their 2020 schedules underway over this past weekend competing in the Surf City Winter Tournament against a solid group of California-based teams at locations all over southern California’s Orange County, with most of these games we’re about to highlight taking place at Bill Barber Park in Irvine, which is the home to the Premier Girls Fastpitch national tournament every summer. Scores and highlights from Gamechanger and the Gamechanger app, available on Apple IPhones and IPads in their app store.

Washington Ladyhawks Abraham 14U 9, Locomotion 0: The Issaquah-based squad got a strong effort from two pitchers to open the tournament on Saturday with a win. Hurlers Sarah Wright and Kaelani Randall combined on a one-hitter, with Wright striking out 10, and aiding the pitchers offensively were two Valleyites. CHS’ Maddie Knowles was 0-1 with a walk and two runs scored, and Twin Falls Middle School’s Sam Prosise was 0-3 with a run scored.

SoCal Choppers 11, Snohomish Shock Oylear 16U 5: The Shock saw their weekend come to a close falling to the Los Angeles-area team yesterday. Cedarcrest High School’s Allyson Smith was 0-2 but had a walk, RBI and run scored for the Shock, who went 0-3 on Saturday, falling to three other California teams.

Washington Ladyhawks Abraham 14U 8, Explosion Flores/Gomez 7: Knowles was 1-3 with an RBI, but she made it count, as her single scored teammate Johnson with the walk-off run capping off a wild six-run final inning comeback as the ‘Hawks literally stole victory from the jaws of what looked to be certain defeat Saturday afternoon.

Washington Ladyhawks Abraham 14U 7, SoCal A’s 2: Prosise was 1-2 with a run scored and RBI for Abraham as they took care of the California team to close out the opening day on Saturday. The Hawks were the only non-Golden State team in the tournament this past weekend. Knowles was 0-2.

Washington Ladyhawks Abraham 14U 7, Orange County Hustlers 5: Prosise was 1-2 with a RBI as the Hawks broke out to a 7-0 lead after two in their opener early yesterday but had to hold on through a late comeback attempt by the Anaheim-area team to seal the win.

Washington Ladyhawks Abraham 14U 5, SoCal A’s 2: Knowles was 1-2 with a double and RBI as Abraham handled their second A’s team of the tournament to advance to the tourney semis last night.

Ohana Tigers 5, Washington Ladyhawks Abraham 14U 3: Since the ‘Hawks started play last fall, they’ve only lost twice – one of those coming in this semifinal matchup last night. The two Valleyites – Knowles and Prosise – combined to go 0-4 in this one for the local team.
