Friday college scoreboard

It was a busy day yesterday. We’ll have more for you throughout today on Mount Si’s Scarlet and Gray football game last night, and also prepare our team previews as well for you. In the meantime, we have a ton of college action for you. We’ll start on the volleyball floor with the opening day of the 2013 college volleyball season.

Volleyball
Cal State Bakersfield def Charlotte, 25-17, 28-30, 25-15, 29-27; Davidson def Charlotte 26-24, 25-15, 15-25, 22-25, 15-11 – At a tournament in Davidson, NC, just outside of Charlotte, the Charlotte 49ers volleyball team fell in two matches, but a Valleyite had a pair of solid matches to start the 2013 campaign. Sophomore Sarah McDonald, from Snoqualmie and a 2012 graduate of Mount Si High School, had a college career-best 13 kills and five digs to aid the 49ers in the game against UCSB and then followed that up with nine kills and two digs for Charlotte in the nightcap against host Davidson.

San Diego State def UC Davis 25-17, 22-25, 25-16, 13-25, 15-5 – A former Mount Si player led the way for SDSU in their season opening win at a tournament in Baton Rouge, LA. Summer Nash, a senior this fall, had 19 kills, three aces and eight digs for the Aztecs; Nash graduated from Bishop Blanchet High School in Seattle but spent the 2006 and 2007 seasons as a member of the Wildcats before transferring.

PLU def Whitman 25-18, 25-12, 25-13; Calvin def PLU 21-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-11, 15-12 – Pacific Lutheran opened the 2013 season with a split of two at a tournament in Tacoma. Sophomore Aubrey Larion, from North Bend and a 2011 MSHS grad, had four aces and a dig to aid the Lutes in the match against Calvin, while she had an additional ace and two digs for PLU in the contest against conference rival Whitman.

St. Olaf def Crown 25-8, 25-8, 25-18 – St. Olaf opened the year with a blowout win, and a Valleyite made her college debut. Freshman Lexie Read, from Snoqualmie and a 2013 Mount Si grad, aided St. Olaf with two kills and a dig. The Oles also defeated Bethany Lutheran in a second match; Read did not play. Both matches were in Northfield, MN.

Drake def Montana State 25-15, 21-25, 28-26, 25-15 – Montana State fell in four sets in a contest at Laramie, WY. Junior Zoe Gogan, of Fall City and a 2011 MSHS grad, had limited action for the Bobcats with no stats of note. MSU also fell to Idaho in a separate match yesterday; Gogan did not play.

Women’s Soccer
UNLV 5, Portland State 0 – UNLV opened the home schedule in Las Vegas, NV, with a blowout of the visitors from Portland, OR. Freshman Miranda Rawlings, a 2013 MSHS grad from North Bend, started and played the full 90 for the Rebels, with one shot on goal that did not result in a score.

Linfield 3, Warner Pacific 1 – Linfield started off 2013 on home turf in McMinnville, OR, with a win over the NAIA side. Junior Jessica Hargett, from North Bend and a 2011 MSHS grad, started for Linfield and played a little over 40 minutes, with one shot that did not go on goal.

Oregon State 1, Texas 0 – The Beavers opened the 2013 home schedule in Corvallis, OR, with a nationally-televised win over the Longhorns. Gwen Bieck, from Duvall and a 2012 Cedarcrest HS grad, started for OSU and played the full 90 minutes, with no stats of note; the game was shown on the Pac-12 network.

Cal Poly 4, Sacramento State 0 – Sacramento State traveled to meet Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, CA, and was blanked by the hosts. Sophomore McKenna Swanson, a 2012 CHS grad from Duvall, started and saw good minutes for Sacramento State; her teammate and fellow CHS grad Maggie Pleis did not see action.

Stony Brook 2, Fairfield 0 – In Stony Brook, NY, the hosts posted a win over the visiting Stags. Senior Nikki Stanton, from North Bend and a 2009 MSHS grad, started and played good minutes for Fairfield, with one shot recorded; that shot did not reach goal.

Puget Sound 1, Hardin-Simmons 0 – In San Antonio, the Loggers opened the season with a big win over a Texas team. Junior Lauren Hamilton, from Spokane but who has family living in the North Bend area, saw 29 minutes of action off the bench aiding the defense for UPS, with no stats of note.

Rocky Mountain College 3, Northwest 1 – In Kirkland, the visitors from Montana rolled to a win over the host Eagles. Northwest senior Jessica Oliver, a MSHS grad from North Bend, started for the Eagles and played 70 minutes, with a shot on goal that did not go in.

Cross Country
Linfield men vs. Lewis and Clark – In Portland, Linfield opened the season with a dual meet against LCC; Linfield junior Chad Linnerooth, a 2011 Cedarcrest High School graduate from Carnation, finished 10th overall among the men with a time of 22 minutes, 26.1 seconds.

Lipscomb women at Belmont Invite – In Nashville, the Lipscomb women opened the 2013 schedule in a meet hosted by local rival Belmont; senior Missy Dowd, from Duvall and a 2010 Cedarcrest grad, finished 74th, clocking 21:51.63.

Men’s Soccer
Western Washington 6, Trinity Lutheran 1 – Western Washington closed out the exhibition schedule at home in Bellingham with a dominant performance against the visiting Everett school. Redshirt freshman Nate Popp, a 2012 MSHS grad from Ames Lake, played 26 minutes off the bench for WWU with no stats of note.
