The SVSJ’s cross country report for Sunday, September 29

We now bring you our second weekly installment of news from high school and college cross country.

We first look at the Bellevue Invitational high school meet, which took place yesterday at Lake Sammamish State Park. Both Mount Si and Cedarcrest were represented in the meet, which drew a large number of schools from all over the region and a total of nearly 1,500 high school runners.

There were some good results for both the Wildcats and Red Wolves in the meet. On the boys’ side, senior Gage Catherman was one of several Cedarcrest guys who had strong showings. Catherman finished 13th in his varsity race clocking 18 minutes, 12.08 seconds. Fellow senior Logan Orndorf competed in a race for top varsity runners, and he took 16th, with a time of 17:12.47. Mount Si’s top boys’ showing came from freshman Grant Baker, who clocked 18:47.07 to take 16th in his varsity race.

The girls had some really good showings for both schools, particularly from top freshmen. Mount Si’s Hannah Waskom finished 11th in the main girls’ varsity race, with a time of 20:26.19 and Cedarcrest’s Madi Shinn continued her strong start to the season, clocking 21:40.49 for an 11th place finish in her varsity flight.

Cedarcrest seniors Olivia Waterman (20:40.72, 16th in main varsity) and Amelia Anderson (21:31.43, 13th in second varsity) also finished well, as did Mount Si’s Bailey Scott, back after missing the past couple of races; the Wildcat senior clocked 20:43.74 to take 18th in the main varsity race.

The races for both the boys and girls were divided into five separate flights – four for varsity and one for junior varsity runners. There was also an “open” run for other athletes who didn’t run in the main five races, and Mount Si senior Sydney Leonard had a big day in the girls’ open race, finishing 11th with a time of 23:40.40.

The runners had to deal with some very difficult weather conditions on the course, but all fared well despite the nasty rain and wind.

Cedarcrest will next compete this coming Saturday as they make another trek across the Cascades to Yakima for the Sunfair Invite; the Red Wolves will be competing in their second meet in Yakima in the past couple of weeks – just last weekend, they were there for the Apple Ridge Run invitational. Mount Si will have a league meet this Wednesday at Interlake, then will head up to Marysville this coming Saturday for the Twilight invitational.

Now to the colleges. All women’s results for you today.

Greensboro, NC meet – Brevard College (NC)’s women’s team competed in a meet in Greensboro, NC, yesterday, and freshman Madison Smith had a solid showing; the 2013 Cedarcrest HS grad from Duvall finished 25th overall, clocking 20:58 on the 5k course.

Stanford Invitational, Palo Alto, CA – The big Stanford meet drew Southern Oregon’s team and thus their top women’s runner, senior Alex Rudd, a 2010 Mount Si HS grad from North Bend. Rudd took 67th in the non D-I race, with a time of 23:16.

Rocky Mountain Shootout, Boulder, CO (hosted by Colorado University) – Many of the state of Colorado’s top college cross country programs made their way to this meet hosted by CU and that included Regis College’s team. Junior A. Chittenden, from Duvall and a Cedarcrest HS grad, ran for Regis in the meet and finished 65th with a time of 25:52 on the 6k course.
