Athletes of the Week for 4-2

We round out the package this morning with our Athletes of the Week. We start our girls’ selections for the spring, and we head to track and field for both of these.

MOUNT SI – The Wildcats opened the Kingco schedule with a nice effort last Thursday against the Interlake Saints. Leading the way for the girls was junior Karlie Hurley, who earns our nod after recording three event wins, taking top spot in the 200 meter race, the 400 meter dash and the high jump, and helping the Wildcat 4×200 relay team record a victory as well. Hurley is one of the team’s top returners this spring, and will look to make it back to state, where she was as part of relay teams last spring.

CEDARCREST – The Red Wolves have their strong returning core of veterans, among them seniors Diana Carr, Amelia Anderson, Olivia Waterman and Bailey Parish, but there’s a freshman looking for a spot amongst that core group in 2014. Her name is Briana Deveraux, and after two strong showings in the 400 meters this past week, CHS track and field fans perhaps will start to take notice. Deveraux earns our nod this week after finishing second in the event at last Thursday’s Cascade Conference four-way meet at King’s, then took third this past Saturday in the freshman/sophomore division of this event at the Holder Relays in Yakima. Her time of one minute, 4.53 seconds in that race was a season best thus far, but there’s plenty of season to come for her. Look for Deveraux to emerge as a key face in the sprint events for the Red Wolves as she continues to get more experience at this level
