Wednesday diamond nuggets……

Good morning. Action from last night this morning, starting off with a little softball, as a pair of local teams with Valley athletes are competing in national tournaments this week. Scores and highlights:

ASA 16U Western Nationals, Salt Lake City
Bellevue Blast ’98 7, Davis County (UT) Kaos 4: Mount Si High’s Lauren Wilbourne went 2-2, scoring a run and driving in another, for the Bellevue team as they beat the suburban Salt Lake City squad in the opener of the tournament in Utah.

Utah Bullets 3, Bellevue Blast 2: Wilbourne allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits in the circle for the Blast, and also 1-3 with Bellevue’s two RBI’s as the Blast fell late to the Bullets, who scored a run in the seventh to break a 2-2 tie and take the win. Wilbourne received a no-decision for her pitching performance.

USSSA 12U Nationals, Perris, CA
The Core (CA) 10, Issaquah Flame 12U Hume 7: North Bend’s Hope Bostick led the way for the Flame in their opener at the national tournament in southern California, going 2-3 with a double, scoring two runs and driving in two more, but the California team held on for the win. Snoqualmie’s Molly Wilbourne was 0-2, but walked once and scored a run for the Issaquah team.

Issaquah Flame Hume 12, There’s No Tomorrow (CA) 3: The Flame bats heated up in the fourth inning, as they scored eight runs to break open a close game and cruise to the win to even their record at the tournament at 1-1. Bostick hit another double and scored two runs, while Wilbourne was 2-2 with two runs scored and two RBI’s to pace the Flame.

We should mention by the way the USSSA tourney in California is being held at a complex called “Big League Dreams”, which features youth-sized replica fields patterned after venerable professional ballparks, such as Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles and Fenway Park in Boston. The Flame’s two games yesterday were played on the “Dodger Stadium” replica field, and the Flame has another game this morning to close out pool play which will be played on a replica of Al McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket, RI, where the minor-league Pawtucket Red Sox play.

Minor League Baseball
Rookie: Chicago Cubs 8, Arizona 4 – In Arizona Rookie League play last night, the Cubs rookies scored six runs in the fourth to roll to the win in Goodyear, AZ. MSHS grad Max Brown went 1-4 for Arizona in the loss. He was drafted by the Diamondbacks in the June MLB draft.

“A” Midwest: Quad Cities 11, Beloit 4 – QC, affiliated with the Houston Astros, rolled to the road win over the Snappers last night in Beloit, WI. MSHS alum Tim Proudfoot played for the Oakland A’s-affiliated Beloit last night and went 0-4. His batting average dropped below .200 with the performance.
