Time now for our Athletes of the Week. We head back to the girls this week, and are hitting the trail to talk a little cross country.
MOUNT SI – It once again has been another impressive start to the season for Wildcat star junior Hannah Waskom. And after this past weekend’s efforts, more people will probably be paying attention, not that they shouldn’t have been already. Waskom finished 12th out of 105 girls competing in the Danner division comprising the top runners participating at the Nike Portland high school cross country meet down in the Rose City this past Saturday. Waskom’s time of 18 minutes, 24.03 seconds was just a little over 40 seconds behind the winner, a freshman from a school in Portland, but to do this well – for the second straight year – against competition from all over the western United States will help enhance her college recruiting possibilities. Waskom took seventh in a different division in last year’s race. Mount Si will be competing in a twilight meet this coming weekend in Marysville.
CEDARCREST – The Red Wolves’ Madi Shinn had a solid run this past Saturday at the Bellevue Invite at Lake Sammamish State Park in Issaquah, and the junior gets our nod this week. Shinn finished seventh in her varsity race, one of four varsity races that took place as part of the meet, in a time of 20:42.35, a little under a minute behind the winner, a freshman from Ballard. Shinn is among the top girls on the Red Wolves squad this fall, and could be in position as the season wears on to be a contender for a berth to the 2A state meet in November over in the Tri-Cities. CHS will be crossing the Cascades for their next meet, this coming weekend in Yakima.
