Friday news

Good Friday morning. We start on the diamond this morning.

Mount Si High School’s baseball “C” team fell in heartbreaking fashion yesterday to Hazen’s “C” squad, 5-4, at Hazen High School in Renton. A bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Max Lawson completed a four-run comeback for the Highlanders in the bottom of the seventh to win it after they trailed coming into that frame 4-1.

Kyle Tat led Hazen, going 2-3 with a double and run scored, and Morrie Solam also had two hits, including a double, also scoring a run but driivng in another. 20 different players got an at-bat in the contest for the Wildcats, with Kaden Martindale leading the way, going 2-2 with two RBI’s. Jadon Grosnickel won it in relief for Hazen on the hill, allowing two runs on two hits, striking out four, in two innings. Collin Fraser took the loss in relief for Mount Si, allowing four runs, three earned, on two hits in 1/3 inning, striking out one.

Mount Si is now off until June 1 when they meet Skyline at home in Snoqualmie.

In youth action last night, scores and highlights as always powered by Gamechanger and the Gamechanger app, available on Apple IPhones and IPads in their app store:

Rawlings uses big inning to take care of Wildcats 13U’s: A six-run fifth propelled the Seattle-based Rawlings Tigers Velo to a 10-4 win last night over the Wildcat Baseball Club’s 13U select squad on WBC’s home turf at Si View Park in North Bend. Jacoby Schmidlapp doubled, scored a run and drove in a second pacing the home side, but it was Oliver Hetzel pacing Rawlings, with a double, run scored and three RBI’s. Brady Hennig was the losing pitcher for WBC, allowing four runs, two earned, on three hits in 1/3 of an inning. Wildcat starting pitcher Reed Gilmore allowed two runs on one hit in two innings, walking three and striking out three.

Rock Creek rolls to 14U win: Maple Valley’s Rock Creek routed the Bellevue Dragons 14U Elite last night 12-1 at Bellevue High School. Future MSHS’er Drew Hossfeld was 0-1 for the Dragons in the contest.

Banks’ college career comes to close: Concordia scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth and stunned Bellevue University of Nebraska 7-5 in the title game of the NAIA’s opening round regional tournament being hosted by the Bruins in Omaha, ending BU’s season and the college career of their senior infielder, Cody Banks. Banks, who is from Duvall and graduated from Cedarcrest HS, went 2-4 with a walk and run scored for Bellevue and finishes this season hitting .344 with seven homers and 39 RBI’s. He spent three seasons with the Bruins and closes his career having done very well, hitting .341 with 11 homers and 88 RBI’s over his Bruins run. Banks joined Bellevue following two seasons at Big Bend Community College over in Moses Lake, where he, too, had tremendous success. The pros could be Banks’s next stop; if we find out anything, we’ll be sure to let you know.

Wrestling: Success on mat this week for CHS boys and girls
Cedarcrest High School’s boys wrestling team posted a pair of wins this week. Last night, they handled Shorecrest 42-36. Contested match winners for the Red Wolves included Ashton Butterfield (120 lbs.), Evan Reid (152), Anthony Weiker (195) and Dimitrios Giampapa (285). Three other Red Wolves, including Matt Weinert (220), took matches by forfeit. Tuesday night, they dominated Meadowdale, handling affairs 54-24. All six CHS wrestlers who competed in the meet against Maverick opposition pinned those guys, led by Buttefield, Weinter, Giampapa and Reid. Also earning wins by pin were Peter Schaefer (145) and Andrew Weiker (285).

The Red Wolves continue action next week.

Meanwhile, on the girls’ side, the Red Wolve ladies also fared well, going 10-6 in a scramble on Wednesday up in Snohomish. Abby Varaday (140), Alyssa Adams (120) and Joey Ward (135) all went 2-0 in their matches up there, facing a host of Wesco 3A and 4A competition. On Monday, the Red Wolves competed in their season opening scramble at Cascade High School in Everett, and went 8-4 on the night, led by a 3-0 effort from Jessica Wonder (135). Adams and Lily Smith (120) both went 2-0 in their matches.

Again, action continues next week for the ladies.

Basketball: Red Wolve ladies drop game to Archbishop Murphy
Cedarcrest High School’s girls’ basketball team had a tale of two parts of the game – very good edges, but a not-so-good middle – and that proved to be the difference in their 44-36 loss to Archbishop Murphy last night. CHS’s defense held Murphy to six total points in the first and fourth quarters but saw Murphy do most of their damage in the middle two frames.

Head coach Brad Knowles hopes for a different result next Monday, when the teams meet again at Archbishop Murphy’s gym in Mill Creek, which hosted last night’s game. “We’re looking forward to a better effort,” he told us. Kat Townley led CHS with 11 points. Cedarcrest was playing without senior Jaylin Yowell, now out for the season after her knee injury during Tuesday’s overtime Red Wolve win over Meadowdale. It’s to her medial collateral ligament, so another setback for Yowell, who now will look to prepare for the fall, where she will be attending classes at the University of Washington.

Track and Field: Wildcat track splits with Skyline
Mount Si High School’s track and field team split their meet with Skyline at home in Snoqualmie on Wednesday. The Wildcats boys won their team title 84-57 over the Spartans but the ladies fell to Skyline 91-44.

Mount Si’s boys were led by Lorenzo Beverly, who swept the jumping events. He cleared five feet, 10 inches to take the high jump, 20’7″ for the long jump crown, and 39′ 9 1/4″ to win the triple jump. Distance runner Andrew Ross won both distance races, clocking 4:27.73 to win the 1600m, and 10:06.79 to take the 3200m. There was a top five Wildcat sweep in the 1600, with Ross leading a group including Paul Talens, Tychon Preston, Tristan Gray and John Pratapas. Ross’s 3200m win also had a Wildcat finish runner-up – freshman Rowan Stannard, who clocked 10:59.59. Daniel Martin swept the hurdles events for Mount Si, clocking 15.73 seconds to win the 110m hurdles, and 43.65 for the win in the 300m.

On the girls’ side, Bailey Hall and Jaida Warrick each pocketed a pair of event wins for Mount Si. Hall swept the sprint races, winning the 100m in a time of 13.32, and the 200m in a time of 28.39. Warrick cleared 13’11” to take the long jump and won the javelin also with a toss of 75’10”. Elsewhere, Mount Si 4×100 and 4×400 relays won races, with the 4×100 crew of Hall, Claire Bailey, Ayano Loucks and Lena Hillsberg winning that race clocking 1:01.20, and the 4×400 unit of Ravenna Vaden, Addie Craig, Scooby Reid and Ava Rodriguez winning that race with a time of 4:29.16. Rounding it out, Olivia Ciabattari won the high jump clearing 4’2″.
