XC news and some diamond cuts on a Thursday…..

Good Thursday morning. We’re going to talk a little cross country as the truncated season winds down for both Mount Si and Cedarcrest High Schools. Mount Si will finish its season tomorrow with their lone home meet of the truncated campaign, as they take on Hazen at the South Fork Landing Park (the old Cascade Golf Course) in North Bend. Last Wednesday, they went down to Liberty High School in Renton to meet the Patriots.

Team scores are not available but from the looks of the results Mount Si did themselves well in the meet on both the boys’ and girls’ sides. Four of the top five finishers in both races were Wildcats, led on the boys’ side by senior Paul Talens, who clocked 16 minutes, 11 seconds and beat teammates John Pratapas and Andrew Ross (16:47, t-second) and Tychon Preston (17:05, fourth) to round out a top-four Mount Si showing in that race. The ladies were led by Addison Craig, who took second clocking 20:26. Juniors Makaylee Jensen (21:03, third), Ava Rodriguez (21:16, fourth and Ravenna Vaden (21:50, fifth) rounded out that strong showing for the ladies. The winner of the race, who beat Craig by a little over 45 seconds for that top spot, was Liberty’s Anna Grabowski (19:39).

Mount Si will celebrate their senior classes tomorrow at the home meet, which hopefully will be picked up by NFHS Network, so check in with them for that tomorrow afternoon.

Cedarcrest runs “state” meet in comforts of home: The Red Wolves finished their season this past Saturday with the “virtual state” meet hosted by the Washington State Cross Country Coaches’ Association. As we mentioned last week, this meet was being held at CHS for the Red Wolve runners, who all raced 12 1/2 laps around the school’s track, with the times from those runs calculated to get official placings and what not.

While overall state placings were not reported, John Meier was the top Red Wolve boys’ finisher, clocking his laps in 16:26.4, followed by London Haley (16:59.4), Nate Bergman (17:02.9) and Jack LeBlanc (17:50.4). The girls were led by Sonja Blycker, who clocked 19:56.5, followed by Avery Zlateff (21:50.7), Bailey Perin (22:04.2) and Sierra Swart (23:00.7).

CHS coach Bruce McDowell thanked his athletes for their efforts this spring. “It wasn’t easy. Only five weeks. Only five meets. Having to train in masks. Hopefully, we will be able to back to “normal” or as close to normal as we can get for the real 2021 season,” McDowell told us by email.

Scores:

Softball
Efforts of North Bend’s Trout not enough for UMary softball: The struggles for North Dakota’s University of Mary softball ladies continued Monday as they were swept in two by in-state rival Minot State, by the scores of 6-2 and 10-2 in the respective two games.

North Bend’s Maddy Trout did her best, especially in the opener, to help UMary. The senior, a 2017 MSHS’er, went 2-3 in the contest for the Marauders. She also played the nightcap and was 0-2 in that contest. Trout is struggling this season, hitting only .154 after hitting almost .400 last season for UMary.

The Marauders, part of NCAA Division II’s Northern Sun Conference, hop in a bus today headed east to the Twin Cities to begin a weekend road swing in Minnesota. They play two tomorrow with Concordia-St. Paul, then drop down into Mankato to meet Minnesota State-Mankato for two on Saturday. The NSIC Digital app, available on phones, tablets, and smart TV devices will have live streams of all the games, starting at noon tomorrow and 11am on Saturday.

Baseball
Mount Si’s Christensen competes in select game: Mount Si High School’s Liam Christensen was in action last night with his select baseball squad, the Bellevue-based Boys of Summer Blue 18U’s, as they played the Washington A’s Premier in a Seattle Premier League clash at Interlake High School in Bellevue. This one was a pitcher’s duel won by the Sammamish-based A’s 2-0 with Christensen, serving as Boys’ leadoff hitter in the contest, going 0-3 with a walk. Christensen is one of several MSHS baseball players playing select ball with Boys teams this spring and summer outside the normal high school season, which will not start for another month or so; the BoS 16U team has several Wildcats, led by pitcher Tristan Aasland.

Seasons for all the Boys teams will continue through to July minus the break expected for high school play in a few weeks.
