CHS baseball to 2-0 off another win over Shorecrest, plus alum Davenport survives tough test in college contest…..

Time now for last night’s action. We start with some baseball for you.

Cedarcrest High School’s baseball team opened their home schedule last night with a rematch of their game from Wednesday night in which they outlasted Shorecrest High School’s Scots on SHS’s field in Shoreline. Well, the Red Wolves were the host team last night, and the result proved to be the same. Timely hitting, and discpline at the plate, proved fruitful for the Red Wolves as they moved to 2-0 with another win.

Kian Pegueros-Warren went 2-3 with a walk and two RBI’s, and CHS hitters took advantage of 11 Shorecrest walks en route to a 7-4 victory. Pegueros-Warren got the win on the mound in relief, allowing a run on two hits striking out three in three innings of work in the place of starter Sheldon Egger, who allowed an unearned run on three hits striking out three in two innings of work.

The Red Wolves opened the scoring in the first inning, taking advantage of a defensive miscue by the Scots to score the first run. Trace Crossland, with two out and on at second base following a single and stolen base, attempted to steal third, which he did, and the throw from the plate by Shorecrest’s catcher Rowan Hinderer to third in an attempt to catch Crossland stealing went awry, allowing the Red Wolve base runner to score. A passed ball charged to CHS allowed Kolby Herling to score the Scots’ first run in the second inning. The Red Wolves responded in their half of the frame, with a Kobe Alves sacrifice fly out scoring Mason Pudwill from third base.

The game would remain 2-1 Red Wolves to the fourth, when Hudson Cunningham doubled for Shorecrest to score teammate Bennett Foster. Cunningham’s double was the big hit of the game for the Scots and he finished 2-3 with that RBI leading Shorecrest. Foster also had two hits and the run scored pacing Shorecrest. But Cedarcrest once again responded in their half of the frame, and the walks were the story. Shorecrest pitchers walked the bases loaded, delivering free passes to Nick Mallory, Alves and Josh Polacek in that order. That set up Trace Crossland who grounded into a fielder’s choice to score Alves and put CHS back in front. Pegueros-Warren then got a key two-out single to score Sam Chase and the Red Wolves were up 4-2.

Things really got good in the sixth. Shorecrest reliever Diego Alcaraz walked five straight Red Wolve hitters, the last two with the bases loaded of course, and that pushed CHS’s lead to 6-2. He was lifted from the game without getting a single out, and on came Ethan Hancock to pitch for the Scots. He was welcomed into the game rather rudely by CHS hitter Joey Newell, who ripped a single past the infield to score Crossland, who was among those that made it on base by the Alcaraz free passes. Shorecrest was able to plate a pair of runs in the seventh to make it interesting, but then the Red Wolves brought Linder in to slam the door shut in a save situation, and he did just that, striking out the lone hitter he faced to finish off the victory for CHS.

Crossland went 1-3 with a walk, two runs scored and an RBI pacing the Red Wolves, who will spend next week taking on Shorewood, the Scots’ city rivals from Shoreline. Next Wednesday’s game will be at home in Duvall while next Friday’s game is away at Shorewood. The home game is a 4:00 p.m. first pitch while the road game starts at 4:30. We’re checking now on streaming arrangements for CHS baseball for you and will update when we find out something.

Also:

Davenport back in the win column at the college level: CHS grad Aaron Davenport evened his record at 2-2 last night for the University of Hawaii’s baseball team, as the ace pitcher was challenged a bit, but survived his test with the University of California-Riverside.

Davenport allowed five runs on eight hits, walking two and striking out eight in seven innings of work as Hawaii overcame a 5-1 deficit to handle Riverside 7-5 under the lights down in southern California. The sophomore, a 2018 Red Wolve alum, started out strong this season, with one 13-strikeout performance last month against Hawaii Pacific, but he has been challenged as of late, with the win coming following a pair of losses in his two most recent outings. He is aiming to be the first player with CHS ties to be drafted in the Major League Baseball draft, and that could happen as soon as this summer. He currently is 2-2 with a 2.85 earned run average and has 55 strikeouts in 47 1/3 innings pitched, better than a strikeout an inning.

Ed-Wood sinks Mountlake: In action involving teams from Cedarcrest’s Wesco pod, Edmonds-Woodway used a strong pitching performance from Maddox Stojkovic to take care of Mountlake Terrace last night at home in Edmonds. Stojkovic allowed a run on three hits, striking out eight in five innings of work as the Warriors beat the Hawks 5-1. Jacob Gabler went 1-3 with a run scored to pace Ed-Wood, while Dominic Kim was 2-2 with a double and Mountlake’s lone run. The Red Wolves meet the Hawks April 21 and 23 followed by two with the Warriors April 26 and 28.

More baseball coming up for you.
